Mighty Quinn's New York Slow-Smoked Barbecue in Manila- SM Mega Fashion Hall

Mighty Quinn's Slow Smoked Barbecue- What started out as a humble barbecue purveyor in Smorgasburg, an outdoor flea food market in Brooklyn, turned out to be an overnight star that created a buzz in the food industry of New York City.

Not long after its food market debut, with several publications including a feature on the New York Times (which food experts regard as the Academy Awards), Mighty Quinn's founders Hugh Mangum, Micha Magid, and Christos Gourmos, opened its flagship store in the East Village of NYC on December 2012.

Now, The Standard Group, the same team who brought us katsu master Kazuya Takeda of Yabu, and ramen king Shigemi Kawahara of Ippudo, has flown Mighty Quinn's barbecue pitmaster himself, Hugh Mangum, to introduce what real Amercian barbecue is like to Filipinos.

The inauguration started with a wood cutting ceremony led by Mr. John Concepcion of Standard Hospitality Group, Hugh Mangum of Mighty Quinn's, and Mr. Steven Tan of SM Supermalls.

Everyone enjoyed the starter of Sweet Corn Fritters (P165/small, P326/medium, P645/large) while waiting for the parade of meats to come out.

It was a smorgasbord of juicy and chunky meats, complemented with delightful side dishes, pickles, and Mighty Quinn's signature barbecue sauce.

Alas, the counter was opened to serve the hungry and equally excited guests.

Almost everyone got the signature smoked Brisket (P485/single serving, P1295/by the pound) that placed Mighty Quinn's on the headlines. Tender slices of slow-cooked beef smoked, charred, and hand-carved to perfection.

The 20-hour beef brisket was flavorful on its own, but I prefer mine drenched in Mighty Quinn's signature barbecue sauce for a touch of sweetness and tang.

The Spare Ribs (P485/single serving, P1295/by the pound), which was intentionally not the fall-off-the-bone type, was very meaty, tender and succulent, with a nice bite to it. Hugh Mangum recommends eating this with bare hands, to fully appreciate the texture and experience.

Mighty Quinn's sports a fast casual dining setup, wherein customers fall in line and have their meat choices, side dishes and add ons placed on personal cafeteria-style silver trays.

Since it was a media launch, I was able to taste a little bit of everything from the menu. Here's my platter of brisket, spareribs, pulled pork, burnt ends, and chicken, with complementing pickles and sides. Everything was so flavorful and tasty, it could be a little overwhelming for some.

I highly recommend getting the slow-smoked brisket for first time visitors. It basically sums up what Mighty Quinn's barbecue philosophy is all about- "Cooking the old-school way with wood and time".

My personal favorite for the side dishes was the Sweet Potato Casserole (P165/small, P325/medium, P645/large). The smooth and creamy mashed sweet potato, was uniquely topped with walnuts for added crunch and texture.

The Pulled Pork, Burnt Ends, and Spare Ribs were equally scrumptious, but the humongous Brontosaurus Ribs (P1,450) simply made all the guest go whoa! It was a huge slab of slow-smoked short rib that can feed a table of five or even more.

Save room for dessert because Mighty Quinn's offers one hell of a Bread Pudding (P195). The warm cinnamon bread pudding is served ala mode, and is big enough for sharing.

Check out Mighty Quinn's in SM Mega Fashion Hall to have a taste of some authentic New York-style smoked barbecue cooked the old-school way. Promise, it is worth the "Q".
