Singapore has become one of the most sought after destinations in Southeast Asia over the course of the last decade or two. This is probably thanks to a number of factors, not least of which are Singapore’s increasing prominence as an international business hub and the fact that several incredible resorts have sprung up there. At any rate, it’s a place people from all over the world want to visit- and with good reason!
Traveling to a place like this, the best thing to do is often just to explore. You can see and do all kinds of fun things just talking to locals, getting recommendations from your hotel, and even setting off aimlessly. To assist you a little bit in getting to know the area however, here are some of the fun things you can do.
Gardens By The Bay
This is a difficult place to describe, really, but it’s essentially the urban jungle of Singapore. You can think of it as a miniature city built within, around, and in some ways consisting of sprawling gardens. This at least is a fitting description for the “Supertree Grove", where giant trees help to support an elevated walkway. It’s an incredible place to explore, and captures Singapore’s mix of natural and designed beauty.
Marina Bay
Universal Studios Singapore
If you’re familiar with Universal Studios parks in general, this one will feel somewhat familiar. However, many who visit here aren’t familiar, given that it was the first Universal Studios in this part of the world. You’ll find water rides, roller coasters, and various themed areas of the park, mostly based on places in the world (from Madagascar to New York).
Singapore Grand Prix
This is more of a single event than an area to explore, but it may be the most enjoyable annual event in Singapore. It’s part of the worldwide Formula 1 racing calendar, and often one of the most entertaining parts. As a guide to the 2017 race put it, the Marina Bay Street Circuit is always throwing up a few surprises, which makes for thrilling races. Plus, the few days before the race are always incredibly festive.
Little India
Most people think of Singapore as having primarily East Asian influences or just being very international in nature. But the Little India district just north of Marina Bay offers something entirely different: a wonderful glimpse of Indian culture. You can shop for authentic goods, gaze at a spectacular Hindu temple, and enjoy some authentic Indian food, all of which is worthwhile.
Art Week Singapore
As with the Grand Prix, this is more of an event than a place to explore, but it’s definitely one of the annual highlights of the calendar in Singapore. It can actually last as long as two weeks, and while there’s a heavy focus on visual art, there are also exhibitions, tours, talks, film screenings, and music, which makes this a full-fledged art festival in every sense. It’s a great deal of fun no matter what your interests may be, and definitely something to consider structuring your trip around.
