Welcome to Din Tai Fung- home of the famous Michelin-starred xiao long bao from Taiwan.
They recently opened their first Philippine branch in SM Megamall's Mega Fashion Hall.
As expected, the place gets packed on regular days especially on weekends.
Thanks to their efficient queuing system, waiting time is set to a minimal.
Take a sit on the available red chairs outside the entrance, or you can check out the xiao long bao masters through the open kitchen window, while they make your handcrafted soupy dumplings.
We started with their house special appetizers before the main event.
House Special Spicy Jelly Fish (P245)
Din Tai Fung House Special (P155)
Both appetizers have the perfect crunch and texture, but serving size could be bigger.
Waste no time enjoying these signature soupy pork dumplings as they are best eaten fresh and piping hot.
How to eat xiao long bao: Dip in soy-vinegar mixture. Top with ginger if preferred. Place xiao long bao in chinese spoon. Poke the xiao long bao wrapper to release broth. Enjoy and Repeat.
Green Squash and Shrimp Xiao Long Bao (P160- 5 pcs., P315- 10 pcs.)
This healthier xiao long bao variant tastes sweeter than the savory pork xiao long bao. Best not to dip into the vinegar sauce to appreciate its natural sweet flavors.
Truffle and Pork Xiao Long Bao (P135/pc.)
The king of xiao long baos. The premium variant comes with a hefty price tag, but promises only the real thing inside the soupy pork dumplings. Nope, they aren't just made with truffle oil, but actual bits of truffle mushrooms.
How to eat the Truffle Pork Xiao Long Bao: Drink water to cleanse the palate. Use a new Chinese spoon. Eat and enjoy your moment in dreamland.
Shrimp and Pork Wontons with House Special Spicy Sauce (P175-6 pcs.)
As much as I enjoyed their xiao long baos, I could not say the same with their spicy wontons. They were not spicy as I expected it to be, and the wrapper was a bit dry and hard.
Chicken Wings in Shrimp Paste (P185-6 pcs.)
I wanted to like these crunchy chicken wings but some parts were way too salty.
Fried Rice with Sweet Garlic and Scallions (P100)
Thankfully, the fried rice balanced out the saltiness of the chicken wings. We really loved this simple rice dish especially with the sweet garlic bits.
Noodles with Minced Pork Sauce (P145)
The noodles were chewy, but it could use a little more sauce to prevent the noodles from sticking.
Stir-Fried Chinese Broccoli Leaf (P165)
Just because we wanted something healthy and leafy at the same time. Goes well with the fried rice too!
Golden Lava Salted Egg Yolk Bun (P85/2 pcs.)
It tasted more buttery than salty, with a subtle hint of salted egg yolk. It's lighter and not too indulgent as the ones I've tried in Crystal Jade Dining In.
Dare not miss these decadent xiao long bao filled with molten chocolate. The wrapper is more mochi-like compared to the thin and delicate wrapper used in their regular xiao long bao.

Serving time was quite fast. It didn't take long before our orders were complete.

Two heavenly and soft white buns oozing with buttery salted egg yolk filling- What's not to like?

Chocolate Lava Xiao Long Bao (P115-3 pcs.)
Dare not miss these decadent xiao long bao filled with molten chocolate. The wrapper is more mochi-like compared to the thin and delicate wrapper used in their regular xiao long bao.
Exit on the other side and pay upon checkout. This may be an efficient way in settling the bill, but not when everyone checks out on the same time, as you have to line up and wait for your turn.
