What to do in Taiwan: Foodtrip at Taipei's Shilin Night Market 士林夜市

One place you should not miss when visiting Taiwan (Taipei) is Shilin Night Market. It's considered the most famous night market in the city. Instead of having dinner at a casual restaurant, we decided to go on a food trip and sample some of Taiwan's famous street food.

Of course, we started with Shilin's famous Hot Star Large Fried Chicken Chop (NT$55). It's actually what I was looking forward to trying in Shilin. We've been addicted to Taiwanese chicken chops here in Manila and we were more than excited to finally be able to try the real thing.

Places that serve Taiwanese Chicken Chops in Manila:

The price is more or less the same as the ones here in Manila but this is bigger, crispier, meatier and juicier! Excited for Hot Star to invade Manila!!!

It's sooo big it could cover my big face!

Taiwanese Sausage (NT$35) in rice bun (NT$50)

They call it Small Sausage in Big Sausage but the big sausage is actually sticky rice. It replaces the usual soft buns for a more filling and tasty treat.

Several condiments and toppings to choose from..

Can't miss out the fruit cart. Mom bought a small pack of these small pear-looking fruit. I honestly don't know what it is but the vendor said it's golden hawthorn.

It was very crunchy and sweet. What I love most about buying fruits in Taiwan is their fruit powder. We even bought a small jar to take home.

We went down to the basement food court which has bigger food stalls and cleaner dining areas.

Some interesting spots in the basement are these teppanyaki stations where a number of tourists dine in..

and stalls that cook your oyster cake upon order..

Oyster Cake (NT$50)

We sat for a while and ordered one for us. Taiwan's oyster cakes are less egg-y and chewier than the ones being served in Chinese restaurants.

Fresh Fruit Juices

White Bitter Gourd Juice w/ Pineapple (NT$60)

A normal sighting in fruit juice stands are these white bitter gourd/melon which locals believe to have a lot of health benefits. Mom got hers mixed with pineapple to lessen its bitter taste.

Saw a Hot Star Large Fried Chicken booth without the long lines. The fried chicken fillet is cheaper here but I don't know if it's as good as the one we've tried.

Just as we were about to go home, we saw a line building up on the corner of the street.

It's a small cart that sells 'Carbon Barbecue' (NT$12)

Since the line was crazy, I was able to watch closely how they do it.. Twice.

It's basically leeks wrapped in pork meat.

After several flips and turns..

They are ready! Look at how beautifully glazed and charred these bbq are..

One is not enough..

We weren't able to try a lot in Shilin but we had so much fun looking around. We wanted to shop more and try out some games and activities but we were tired from all the walking we did for the whole day. Can't wait for another Shilin food trip in the future!
